How can we help?

Answers to the most common questions. Can't find yours? Email [email protected] and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Getting started

How much does Simit cost?

Your first year is free, starting when you create your account. After that, Simit costs US$0.99 per year. There's one plan with every feature, no ads and no data selling. You can see your date in Settings: Free until <date>, then US$0.99/year.

Nothing is charged in your first year, and there's no in-app purchase yet. When payment starts, it will be a yearly subscription through Apple and the App Store, offered before your free year ends. The App Store may show the price in your local currency. We'll let you know in the app before any charge. Pricing details.

How do I create an account?

Open Simit, enter your phone number, and confirm the one-time code we text you. There's no password or email to remember.

I'm not receiving the SMS code.

Check that your number is entered with the correct country code and that you have signal. Wait a few moments and request the code again. If it still doesn't arrive, contact [email protected].

How do I add a contact?

Go to Contacts, tap the add button, and search by phone number. When you add someone, they're registered as your contact on the server so messaging can work both ways. Only the phone number is used. Names you save stay on your phone.

Your messages & storage

Where are my messages stored?

On your phone. Simit's servers act only as a relay: a message is held on our servers until the recipient's phone has received it, then permanently deleted. If the recipient stays offline, it's deleted after 30 days regardless. Photos are encrypted on your phone, held in private storage only until everyone has downloaded them, then deleted.

We keep a content-free delivery record (message ID, chat ID, sender ID and time) for 30 days so delete for everyone and reporting keep working. See everything we keep.

What happens if I lose my phone?

Because Simit doesn't keep your message history, your messages are only on your phone. By default, Include messages in iPhone backup is off, so if you lose or replace your phone, your message history can't be recovered. Messages that hadn't reached you yet are delivered to your new phone when you sign in (up to 30 days after they were sent).

If you want your history to survive a lost phone, turn on Include messages in iPhone backup in Simit's settings, and your messages are included in your iCloud or computer backup. To protect your account itself, set a Registration Lock PIN.

Note that signing out or deleting the app also deletes your messages from that phone.

Can Simit read my messages?

We'll be straight with you. Simit is not end-to-end encrypted. Messages are encrypted in transit with TLS, and while a message briefly waits for delivery, it's held on our servers in a form our systems can process.

But we don't keep messages. Once your recipient's phone has it, it's permanently deleted from our servers, so we can't see your past messages and there's no history for us to look through. The only time message content reaches our moderators is when someone reports it from their phone. More about encryption.

Why isn't Simit end-to-end encrypted?

Most messengers encrypt the message archives they keep. We chose not to keep an archive at all. Your message travels over an encrypted connection, waits on our server only until your friend's phone receives it, and is then permanently deleted. There is no message history on our servers to leak, sell or hand over.

To be clear: while a message waits for delivery (usually seconds; at most 30 days if the recipient is offline), it sits on our server in a form our systems can process. That's why we don't call Simit end-to-end encrypted.

Not keeping messages isn't the same as end-to-end encryption, and we don't claim it is. More on our Privacy & Safety page.

Is Simit encrypted?

All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit using TLS, and photos are encrypted on your phone with a per-photo key before upload. Simit is not end-to-end encrypted. Messages are deleted from our servers once delivered. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Messaging & matching

Why can't I message someone?

Simit is mutual-contacts only. To exchange direct messages, both people need to have each other saved as contacts. Ask your friend to add your number too, then try again.

Why does it say “Not matched yet”?

You have the other person's number, but Simit can't yet see your number on their side. Either they don't have your number saved, or they have it but haven't synced their contacts on Simit yet. Ask them to save your number (with the correct country code) and open Simit so their contacts sync.

The banner clears automatically once you're matched, or tap Check again. If the banner says to add them instead, they already have you, so just tap Add. Learn more about matching.

What can I send?

Text, emoji and photos from your photo library, in one-on-one or group chats. You can reply to a specific message and forward messages to other chats. Voice messages, videos, documents and locations can't be sent from Simit at the moment.

Can I edit or delete a message?

Yes. Press and hold one of your own messages:

  • Edit changes a text message. It's updated for everyone in the chat and shows an edited label.
  • Delete removes the message for everyone. It's deleted from the other people's phones too, and from our servers if it hadn't been delivered yet.

You can also Reply, Copy or Forward messages from the same menu.

How do group invites work?

When someone adds you to a group, you get an invite instead of being added straight away. Open Group Invites at the top of your chat list to see the group, who invited you and its members. If anyone you've blocked is in the group, Simit tells you before you decide.

Tap Accept to join or Decline to dismiss it. Until you accept, you won't get the group's messages or notifications. If you'd rather not receive invites at all, turn off Group Invites in Settings → Privacy Settings.

Why don't I see someone's last seen?

Either they've chosen to hide it, or you have. Simit's privacy is reciprocal: if you hide your last seen (or show it only to some people), you can't see other people's last seen either. The same goes for read receipts: if you turn yours off, you won't receive other people's, and you'll see Delivered instead. You can change these in Settings → Privacy Settings.

Privacy & security

What is Registration Lock?

Registration Lock is an optional PIN (6 to 12 digits) that protects your account if someone takes over your phone number, for example through a SIM swap, where a carrier is tricked into moving your number to someone else's SIM. They could then receive your SMS code, but without your PIN they can't register your Simit account on another phone.

Turn it on in Settings → Privacy Settings → Registration Lock. Keep your PIN safe; we can't recover it. If you forget it, you can register again after 7 days of inactivity on your account.

Are notification previews private?

By default, yes. Notification previews are set to Name only: your notification shows who messaged you, but not what they said. You can choose Nothing (just "New message") or Name and message in Settings → Notifications → Notification previews.

Notifications are delivered through Apple's push service. Message text passes through it only if you choose Name and message.

How do I turn on App Lock?

Open Settings → Privacy Settings and tap App Lock in the Security section. From then on, Simit asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode before showing your chats, and your conversations are blurred in the app switcher.

How do I block someone?

Open the conversation or the user's profile and choose Block. Blocked users can't message you. You can manage blocked users in Settings → Blocked Users.

What happens when I report?

Press and hold a message and choose Report, or report a person or a whole group from the chat info screen. Your phone then sends the reported message, plus up to 10 messages before it in that chat, to Simit for review. Because we don't keep messages on our servers, this is the only way message content ever reaches our moderators.

Our team reviews every report. Content that violates our Terms of Service is removed for everyone, and offending accounts are suspended. You can also email [email protected].

How do I report a group?

Open the group, tap its name at the top to open the group info, and choose Report Group. Pick a reason and send. You don't need to name a specific member. Our team reviews every group report. If the report can't be sent, Simit offers to email [email protected] instead.

Your account

How do I delete my account?

Open Settings → Account and choose Delete Account. This removes your profile, contacts, and associated data from our active systems, and deletes your messages from your phone. If you no longer have access to the app, email [email protected] from any address with the phone number on the account and we will verify ownership by SMS before deleting it.

My account was suspended. What can I do?

Accounts that violate our Terms of Service can be suspended, which signs you out of Simit. If you think this was a mistake, email [email protected] from any address with the phone number on the account.
